Developed in the 1930s by William Spooner, Spooner’s technology has been utilised in all our industrial equipment for over 90 years. Starting in the textile drying industry Spooner now manufactures process equipment across a wide range of sectors. 

From the bread, we eat to the teabag in our morning drink and the packaging it came in, to the washing machine spinning our clothes and the clean air we breathe, Spooner equipment enhances our lives.

William Wycliffe Spooner (1882-1967)
William Wycliffe Spooner was born in Oxford on the 29th March 1882, son of Dr William Archibald Spooner (who gave us the phrase Spoonerism) and Frances Wycliffe Spooner.
Trinity College, Cambridge
Education & Early Career
Academically gifted William went to read engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge. He then took an apprenticeship at The British Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Manchester before leaving taking various engineering posts.

The Start of Spooner Industries
After years of industry experience William Spooner aged 50 formed his own company developing one of his many inventions - The forced convection air drying machine.

Spooner food division
With 15 successful years in business, William Spooner took his forced convection technology and applied it to the baking industry. This led to the Spooner baking oven becoming famous around the world.

Stock exchange
Spooner Industries is floated on the stock exchange. In the following years, Spooner Industries was owned by Sandvik, Thomas Robinson, Bruel Holdings and Dickinson Legg before returning to private ownership.

Paper Industry
The first air flotation dryer is produced by Spooner. Initially designed for the paper industry, its application has since expanded into converting and metals.
Metal Industry
After entering the metals industry in the 1950s Spooner supplies the first air flotation oven for the coil coating process.

Acquired by the Summers family as part of their portfolio of intellectual property led engineering businesses.
Spooner Office & Factory
New Building
Spooner moved into their new £4million purpose-built manufacturing facility. The site housed plenty of manufacturing space, design offices and a dedicated research and development centre.
80th Birthday Cake
Spooner Celebrate 80 years
In 2012 Spooner Industries Limited celebrated 80 years. Starting in textile drying Spooner now manufactures across five distinctive industries converting, environmental, food, metal and paper.
SpoonerPlus Logo
Launch of SpoonerPlus
In 2015 SpoonerPlus launched taking over from Spooner technical services. SpoonerPlus looks after all Spooner's aftercare including servicing, spares, maintenance and training.

We are proud to be a British manufacturing company with a long history of developing excellent processing equipment. Working with some of the biggest names across the various sectors Spooner has become well-established within the process industry. Providing a tailored solution Spooner works with customers to understand their processes before developing a bespoke solution.
Just like William Spooner did in the early years Spooner continues to invest in research and development. With a dedicated research and development centre, we encourage our staff to push the boundaries by designing and testing new possibilities. Over the last 90 years, we have built up lots of knowledge and experience that we continued to develop and pass on to our apprentices and younger staff members.
