We know that we are only as good as the people who work for us. That’s why we have a history of developing great people through our investments in training, apprenticeships and development programmes.
Just a stone’s throw from Ilkley moor, Spooner sits right in the heart of the local community. Renowned for our knowledge and expertise in engineering process equipment from concept through to installation, we look to recruit like-minded people who want to work and grow in a company that believes in developing both our products and our people.
I joined Spooner in 2014 as an apprentice, as part of my apprenticeship I worked in different departments which were beneficial in providing me with an understanding of how the areas work together. I completed my apprenticeship in 2018, joining the Assembly Department as a Skilled Operative.
A typical day as a Skilled Operative involves building machinery from scratch, assembling machinery or testing fitting machinery ahead of the machine being shipped to our customer’s site. I have had the opportunity to be trained up to deliver crane training and I regularly deliver two-day crane training courses to all new starters in the factory. On particular projects I have worked on customer sites, travel to sites in countries such as Belgium, France, Spain and Switzerland.
I enjoy working for Spooner because of the family feel of the Company, in the assembly department we look after each other and it is a real team environment.
Spooner grows through our employee’s knowledge and expertise that’s why we believe in allowing people to develop their skills further. Our apprentice and graduate schemes provider the best start for people beginning their careers; each apprentice and graduate will receive hands-on learning, mentoring and undertake valuable work. A large majority of our employees joined us on such schemes and have progressed within the Company to senior and Director level positions.
Our schemes run throughout the company to ensure its longevity and the continuous transfer of skills, for more information please contact us.
We know how important it is to allow young people to gain valuable work experience, that’s why we work with the local community. Spooner partner with nearby schools to offer placements every year to give students a taste of what it’s like to work in an engineering manufacturing business.
We also offer well-structured industrial placement opportunities for University students. Our placements allow individuals to gain relevant experience for their degree, whilst getting involved in interesting and beneficial projects for them and the Company.
