Josh Richmond

Skill operative
assembly department

Why did you join Spooner?

I joined Spooner in 2014 as an apprentice, as part of my apprenticeship I worked in different departments which were beneficial in providing me with an understanding of how the areas work together. I completed my apprenticeship in 2018, joining the Assembly Department as a Skilled Operative.

What is a typical day like?

A typical day as a Skilled Operative involves building machinery from scratch, assembling machinery or testing fitting machinery ahead of the machine being shipped to our customer’s site. I have had the opportunity to be trained up to deliver crane training and I regularly deliver two-day crane training courses to all new starters in the factory. On particular projects I have worked on customer sites, travel to sites in countries such as Belgium, France, Spain and Switzerland.

What do you enjoy about working at Spooner?

I enjoy working for Spooner because of the family feel of the Company, in the assembly department we look after each other and it is a real team environment.

Apprenticeships and Graduate Schemes

Spooner grows through our employee’s knowledge and expertise that’s why we believe in allowing people to develop their skills further. Our apprentice and graduate schemes provider the best start for people beginning their careers; each apprentice and graduate will receive hands-on learning, mentoring and undertake valuable work. A large majority of our employees joined us on such schemes and have progressed within the Company to senior and Director level positions.

Our schemes run throughout the company to ensure its longevity and the continuous transfer of skills, for more information please contact us.

Industrial Placements and Work Experience Opportunities

We know how important it is to allow young people to gain valuable work experience, that’s why we work with the local community. Spooner partner with nearby schools to offer placements every year to give students a taste of what it’s like to work in an engineering manufacturing business.

We also offer well-structured industrial placement opportunities for University students. Our placements allow individuals to gain relevant experience for their degree, whilst getting involved in interesting and beneficial projects for them and the Company.

For more details, please contact us.

Diversity

We hire an individual based on their skills, experience, attitude and expertise. We recognise the benefits of diversity in our workforce. Please let us know if you have a disability, a learning difficulty, a medical condition or any other condition which may affect your performance in the recruitment process so that we can endeavour to make the appropriate reasonable adjustments for you.

Right to work

It is a legal requirement that we check all our employees have the right to work in the UK. Before employment commences we will need to see official documentation that successful candidates have the right to work in the UK.
